Turkey's Energy Efficiency Outlook in Industry

Özyeğin University Center for Energy, Environment, and Economy (CEEE) launches a campaign on energy efficiency by implementing the "Turkey's Energy Efficiency Outlook in Industry" project with TUSIAD (Turkish Industry and Business Association). The aim is to contribute to the reduction of the current account deficit and the energy bill of the industrial sector by realizing our efficiency potential in energy, which we are dependent on abroad. TUSİAD President of the Board of Directors Orhan Turan states that ‘According to the data of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, as of the end of July'23, the distribution of our installed capacity according to resources is: 30% is hydraulic energy, 24.1% is natural gas, 20.7% is coal, 11% is wind, 9.9% is solar, 1.6% is geothermal, and 2.6% is other resources. According to the International Energy Agency's World Energy Outlook's Determined Policies Scenario, which is based on the latest policy settings around the world, the new measures will help increase global clean energy investments to more than $2 trillion per year by 2030. That's an increase of more than 50 percent compared to today. Again, according to this scenario, coal use declines in the next few years, while natural gas demand stops increasing at the end of 10 years. When data on energy consumption is read together with climate change targets, we see that renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean energy investments will play a decisive role in the global and national energy equation. The energy crisis does not seem to be removed from our agenda anytime soon. The way to overcome this crisis seems to be a global mobilization, an energy revolution. Turkey's signing of the Paris Climate Agreement is not only an important pioneering step but also means a framework that will accelerate the steps to be taken in the field of energy transformation simultaneously with the world. If you ask where to start, you should start in the industry, transportation, and housing sectors, where energy consumption is the highest. The expansion of solar and wind energy and electric vehicles will pave the way for a rapid transformation.

Implementation of policies to support carbon pricing and electrification all over the world in line with the net zero target; Raising the awareness of not only mega companies but also all segments of the value chain and the policy framework strongly supporting this guidance will enable us to reach energy efficiency scenarios faster. The implementation of measures that prioritize energy efficiency in transportation and residences in megacities where energy consumption is highest will also provide a great benefit in reducing energy costs and carbon emissions on a city scale. We express the strong and critical potential of the industry in energy efficiency on every occasion. In this area, which we see as one of the main elements of the energy efficiency mobilization, I believe that we will walk in a strong partnership with our public institutions, companies, sectoral associations, NGOs and consumers in the "Turkey's Energy Efficiency Outlook in Industry" project, which we will promote with CEEE on September 13.’

The Global Politics Forum

The Global Politics Forum has been established within TÜSİADin 2021 with the aim of approaching global-level political dynamics and foreign policy issues from an interdisciplinary perspective.
