Education for the SDG's

Education for SDG's at ÖzÜ:
At ÖzU, all members are expected to always act in the best interest of humanity by showing awareness about societal issues (environment, health, education, justice, etc.). The same expectation extends to our students who are expected to develop into successful leaders, innovators, as well as role models for integrity. Education at ÖzU reflects its commitment to creating awareness of sustainability. All the students entering ÖzU are enrolled in ENG 101 and ENG 102  courses where the teaching material exclusively focuses on sustainability based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
Subsequently, there are courses offered on sustainability related to the programme the student is studying such as "Ecotourism" course in Hospitality Programme or "Sustainable Design and Environment through Biomimicry in Architecture Programme. In the Faculty of Business, there are various courses to address sustainability. These courses include but are not limited to "Sustainability in Business", "Diversity and Inclusion in Global Organizations", "Business Ethics", and "Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility".
ENG 101 and 102 are two courses offered to all departments where the medium of instruction is in English.
Until the Fall 2018 term when the fundamental change in the course design was finalized and activated, ENG 101 was designed around the dual objective of business ethics and sustainable development. In terms of the course content, the learner was expected to appraise global, environmental, political, economic, legal, and regulatory context for business, especially one of its most critical components, ethics, and show an awareness of and willingness to respond to the complex and interrelated phenomena that constitute the general field of sustainable development. For that purpose, materials regarding both sustainable development and business ethics were analyzed during the lectures.
Beginning with the Fall 2018 term, the courses have been redesigned in lieu of the university’s education policy that “puts sustainability at the nexus of its research, teaching and service activities” so that they develop an awareness of global challenges such as climate change, gender inequality, poverty, environmental degradation and so on. ENG 101 has focused on language and academic skills development through the themes of contemporary global issues and sustainable development. The course addresses the underlying causes and impacts of contemporary global issues and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) which aspire to achieve a sustainable future. It is mainly because Ozyegin University would like to take initiative in such contemporary global issues, their impacts, and possible effective solutions for them. For that purpose, ENG 102 course is also redesigned to help students work creatively on effective and feasible solutions to environmental, economic, and social problems locally and worldwide.
The exit level of ENG 101 and ENG 102 is aligned with the Common European Framework level B2+.
Below is a brief view of the two courses in terms of content and skills objectives.
ENG 101
The ultimate aim of the ENG 101 course – a prerequisite of ENG 102 –  is to help learners acquire and improve academic and language skills in writing and speaking necessary for interdisciplinary undergraduate studies at Özyeğin University. The course aims to do so by focusing on contemporary global issues and the notion of sustainable development. It addresses the underlying causes of global issues and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) which aspire to achieve a sustainable future. Students develop their academic and language skills by studying the economic, social, and environmental pillars of sustainable development and its practical implications at home and abroad.
ENG 102
This course, building on the content and skills objectives of ENG 101, aims to help learners further their academic and language skills, focusing mainly on producing an academic research paper and delivering a presentation as well as providing students with a general understanding of the major solution players/methods to the challenges that we are presently facing in economic, social and environmental areas both at home and abroad.  To this end, students working in groups pinpoint a problem preferably on the university campus or in their locality and carry out research by first doing a literature review to find out solutions similar to the existing problem. Then, they come up with a Problem Solution Paper (PSP) where they present their own solution to the problem.
Following the grading process of PSPs, the most innovative and doable projects are selected and sent to a jury organized by ÖzU Sustainability Platform where the nominated groups present their projects. The University supports the projects chosen by the jury. In this way, students have a chance to realize their projects.
