Women’s Access to Justice in Turkey

Law Clinics Coordinator Attorney Selmin Cansu Demir and her students addressed the rights violations arising from the lack of access to sanitary pads for women and girls imprisoned in women’s penal institutions, stating that women and girls in prison experience menstrual poverty, that the lack of access to free and adequate sanitary pads in closed institutions is a violation of the right to health and requested the Ministry of Justice to make the necessary arrangements. The Ministry of Justice, taking into account the application of OzU Law Clinics, issued a friendly settlement decision with the decision dated 26.12.2022 and application number 2022/10925, upon the Ministry of Justice taking action to take the necessary measures to ensure equal access to sanitary pads for women, thus our students contributed to the end of a discriminatory practice against women with their clinical work.
