OzU organizes various events to enhance the University’s knowhow in sustainability and promote the dissemination of knowledge in this field. One of these events is the “Sustainability Talks" seminar series. The series addresses the multidimensional topic of sustainability with invited speakers from different disciplines. The impact of the seminar series is augmented with the participants and interactive discussions.  In this page both the future and past events are provided. Sustainability Workshops 1 - Socio-Technical Interactions in Transportation - Human x Vehicle x Mobile Technologies

We held a one-day workshop on urban transportation to take an interdisciplinary approach to different dimensions of sustainability, and develop new policy/solution recommendations. The workshop employed an innovative method to shed light on the different dimensions of urban transportation.

The Socio-Technical Interactions in Transportation Workshop analyzed the relationship between technology and society with a focus on urban transportation in Istanbul.  The workshop took place on October 31, World Cities Day, which made it all the more meaningful for us.

The event brought together different stakeholders involved in urban transportation, including automotive manufacturers, NGOs, local governments, academicians, mobile applications, and media, to reflect and debate on multi-dimensional problems and recommended solutions in a collective platform.

World Food Day Conference- Agriculture, Food, and Un/changing Practices in Turkey

October 16, 2019 

World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honor of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. In celebration of World Food Day, Özyeğin University organized the conference “Agriculture, Food, and Un/changing Practices in Turkey” to discuss the sub-goals within the scope of Zero Hunger (Sustainable Development Goal #2), which aims to end all forms of hunger and malnutrition, and achieve food security and improved nutrition for all people, in particular children, throughout the year. The conference analyzed different dimensions of agricultural transformation in Turkey and the relationship between food systems.

6th Local and Rural Development Specialist Training Certificate Program Enrollments Started

9-13 September 2019

Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation and Özyeğin University are jointly organizing the Local and Rural Development Expertise Training Certificate Program which well be held between 9 and 13 September.

The 6th of the certificate program will host 3 panels, 2 workshops and 1 technical trip, along with the lessons to be taught by qualified academics.

At the end of the program, participants will be entitled to take Özyeğin University Local and Rural Development Specialist Training Certificate.

Sustainability Talks 10 - Human Development and Capability Approach: Discussing Inequalities in Turkey

The 10th of the Sustainability Talks, the flagship event organized by the Sustainability Platform at Özyeğin University in celebration of our University’s 10th Anniversary Events to address different dimensions of sustainability with the objective of deepening our knowledge and expanding our horizon about sustainability, will take place with a talk by Prof Dr Pınar Uyan Semerci on “Human Development and Capability Approach: Discussing Inequalities in Turkey”.

In her talk Prof Uyan Semerci will focus on the concept of human development evaluating Turkey from this concept's perspective. In this evaluation she will share her knowledge and experiences regarding the vulnarable groups (e.g. children as to child poverty and child labor). 

Sustainability Talks 9 - Sustainability from Farm to Table - SÜTAŞ

15 April 2019, OzU - X, 12:30 - 13:30

The 9th of the Sustainability Talks, the flagship event of the Sustainability Platform at Özyeğin University organized in celebration of our University’s 10th Anniversary Events will take place with the speech of Mrs Fatma Can Sağlık, Coordinator Corporate Relations of SÜTAŞ. In her talk Mrs Sağlık will emphasize why sustainability is important for SÜTAŞ and cover the sustainability related activities of the company. Subsequently, she will focus on how Sütaş's integrated model called "From Farm to Table" enables the transition to circularity and bioeconomy in dairy production. In this regard, Mrs Sağlık, will underline the importance of sustainability in agricultural production and food providing detailed information of the activities of Sütaş in these areas.

 

 

Sustainability Talks 8 - Gender Equality and Politics in Turkey and in the World

Sustainability Talks 7 - Environmental Problems, Clean Energy and the Role of Business

The 8th of the Sustainability Talks, the flagship event of the Sustainability Platform at Özyeğin University organized in celebration of our University’s 10th Anniversary Events took place with the speech of Mr Richard Betts, Director of Climate Change and Sustainability Solutions, Ernst & Young.  The talk of Mr Betts started with the current environmental problems we are facing.  Subsequently, he covered clean energy as a solution and the role of business in switching to affordable and clean energy.

Sustainability Talks 5 - Soil and Food

Ozyegin University Sustainability Platform is organizing Sustainability Talks as part of our university’s 10th Anniversary Events.  The talk series focuses on different dimensions of sustainability with the aim of deepening our knowledge leading to broadening our vision. 

The forth talk was held on World Soil Day, 5 December 2018, between 13:40 and 15:00 at OzU-X.  hosting our Gastronomy Department faculty, Mr. Tangör Tan and Food Sociologist Prof. Zafer Yenal from Department of Sociology, Boğaziçi University.  In their talk, our guests drew upon the problems in soil and food provision in the world and in Turkey. Sustainability Talks 4 - Environmental Pollution and Climate Change

The fifth of the "Sustainability Talks" series was held on 19 December 2018, between 13:40 and 14:40 at OzU-X with three distinguished guests from AYGAZ: Mr Ali Kızılkaya, Asistant General Manager of Technical Affairs and Investments, Mrs. Mine Acar Ergin, Quality Systems and HSE Manager, and Ms Gülin Özilkiz, Quality Systems and HSE Manager Assistant Manager.  Our guests gave an interactive talk on the role of energy sector in envrionmental pollution and climate change and Aygaz's approach to minimize this effect both at the strategic and practical level. 

Sustainability Talks 3 - Alternative Energy and Sustainable Development

The second of the Sutainability Talks series was held on 31 October 2018 in OzU-X building. The talk has been a panel on Alternative Energy and Sustainable Development. The moderator of the panel was our faculty Dr Göktürk Poyrazoğlu and the panelists were Dr Sylvia Borbonus, Senior Researcher at International Advanced Sustainability Studies and Dr Osman Bülent Tör, Managing Partner and Director of EPRA Electric and Energy.  In the panel, the importance of alternative energy for sustainable development was discussed in detail both at a more general level and for Turkey specifically.  To watch the full talk please click here.

Sustainability Talks 2 - Sustainability in Turkish Business Context and in TOFAS

The third talk of the Sustainability Talks series titled Sustainability in Turkish Business Context and in TOFAŞ was held with the participation of two distinguished guests from TOFAŞ: Mr. Güray Karacar, External Relations Director and Mr. Volkan Varal, Environmental Systems Manager.  In his talk Mr. Karacar dwelled on his personal experience on how the notion of sustainability surfaced and promulgated in Turkish businesss context and the stragetic approach of TOFAŞ towards sustainability underlining the importance of integrated reporting.  Subsequently, Mr. Varal focused on the practical side of sustainability in TOFAŞ.  To watch the full talk please click here

Sustainability Talks 1 - Blue Planet or Plastic Planet?

Ozyegin University Sustainability Platform is organizing Sustainability Talks as part of our university’s 10th Anniversary Events.  The talk series focuses on different dimensions of sustainability with the aim of deepening our knowledge leading to broadening our vision.  The first guest of the series has been Mrs. Şeyda Dağdeviren Hill, Environmental and Sustainability Coordinator of Deniz Temiz TURMEPA.  

In her talk, Mrs. Hill established the link between environmental pollution and excess consumption of humans followed by the extent of the plastic consumption and the harm it causes.  Subsequently she drew our attention to the plastic pollution in the seas and oceans.  She also underlined the fact that through the food chain, the plastic in the seas and oceans threatens not only marine life but human life as well.  The talk concluded with the ways to end plastic pollution.

Seminar on the Role of and Cooperation Among Non-Governmental Organizations and the Business World

17 May 2018

Ms. Melde Çele, Deputy Secretary General for Sustainable Development, Entrepreneurship and Investment Environment at TÜSİAD, was the guest of our University to give a talk on “The Role of and Cooperation Among Non-Governmental Organizations and the Business World Towards the Achievement of Global Goals” to inform our students. The talk took place in  OzU-X Building on Thursday, May 17, 2018. Following the presentation, Ms. Çele answered the students’ questions and had a pleasant conversation with our students.

Seminar on Economics of Climate Change Policies

8 May 2018

Associate Prof. Voyvoda gave a very enlightening talk on the Economics of Climate Change Policies in the B27 Design Area, OzU-X Building, on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 14:00. Drawing from the fact that Turkey will have to join the global trend towards gradually reducing the economy's carbon intensity in the aftermath of the Paris Climate Accord, Associate Prof. Voyvoda offered a macroeconomic analysis for “climate friendly development” in Turkey to seek answers to the following questions:

  • What are Turkey’s responsibilities towards the 2oC goal? What is its emission reduction target? What could it be?
  • What should be the key elements included in the policy package that needs to be adopted in order to achieve the emission reduction target?
  • What will be the medium- and long-term economic effects of these policies?

Seminar on Plastic Pollution in the Oceans

22 March 2018

The Sustainability Seminar Series (now called Sustainability Talks) kicked off on World Water Day with a seminar by Mr Douglas Woodring, one of the leading figures on plastic pollution in the ocean and the initiator of ground-breaking projects on environmental issues. Douglas Woodring gave striking examples to reveal the great scale of plastic pollution in the ocean. Mr. Woodring went on to expose the sources of plastic pollution in the ocean, and discussed what actions are taken by the Ocean Recovery Alliance, which he chairs, and himself to solve this problem, and how everyone may contribute to this process. The seminar ended with a very effective Q&A session.
