Ozyegin University Sustainability Report 2020
The challenges our world is facing are immense. In order to tackle them every institution’s contributions are required and universities are not exempt from this requirement. In fact, during the last few years, universities are increasingly called to demonstrate their active commitment to addressing social and environmental issues through comprehensive reporting practices. Ozyegin University (OzU) is proud to be at the forefront in responding to this call in terms of its pledge to drive sustainable well-being as well as in providing evidence based reporting of its actions and their impact.
We are pleased to share Ozyegin University’s first sustainability report in accordance with GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) Standards. This report is also prepared with the goal of providing an open account of our sustainability efforts with respect to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while at the same time demonstrating our support, commitment and progress towards the principles of United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (UNPRME). As such, this report has the distinction of being one of the leading examples of holistic sustainability reporting that encompasses all the aforementioned standards and principles.
To this end, OzU Sustainability Report 2020 is organized along seven (7) material topics to provide a multifaceted and comprehensive overview of University’s efforts in its fundamental activities of education, research, and knowledge transfer as well as in its leadership, administrative and operational practices. These topics are: 1) Governance, 2) Learning and teaching, 3) Research impact, 4) Diversity and inclusion, 5) Student health, safety and well-being, 6) Empowering staff, and 7) Green buildings and infrastructure.
As a general framework as well as within each of these topics, the report highlights OzU’s sustainability efforts since its founding in 2007 and their culmination in the establishment of the Sustainability Platform in 2016, followed by a more detailed focus on the specific initiatives undertaken between January 2018 and December 2020. As such, this report depicts OzU’s unique response to the global call-to-action for addressing the grand challenges our world is facing.
We hope that OzU’s approach to sustainability; which is rooted in its heritage of entrepreneurship and subsequently transformed into a flourishing culture dedicated to scientific pursuit of solution-centric, feasible and dynamic advances for OzU community and beyond; inspires others to develop their own model for making a positive impact. The world needs our individual and collective effort as institutions of higher education; and no other ecosystem is better suited to embrace the challenge, rise above it and be the linchpin for mobilizing, accelerating and amplifying change towards a world where all living things thrive.
